The Magical Minnehaha Falls
I never thought that Minnehaha Falls in Minneapolis, MN could be more beautiful in the winter than in the summer. A before-sunrise trek to the frozen falls on a gorgeous and cold February morning changed that perception.
Minnehaha Falls, sometimes known as “Laughing Water”, is the most popular city park in Minneapolis. In the summer, the park is a perfect urban escape, offering hiking and bike trails that meander and follow Minnehaha Creek throughout the park. The entire area is typically busy with people.
In the winter, Minnehaha Falls transforms into something magical. As the creek begins freezing in early winter, the water overflows wide into new terrain. Once that freezes over completely, the entire 53 foot tall falls and surrounding area becomes something that one might see in a Peter Jackson movie. I did my best to try and capture that feeling with my camera. A very slick and slightly dangerous hike behind the falls offered the biggest reward. And best of all, there was no one else around at sunrise.
